Abstract

PURPOSE: To control the rate of solidification and obtain a segregation free killed steel ingot by casting molten steel at high temps., then blowng granular steel pieces of limited components together with gaseous Ar at specific weight ratios.
CONSTITUTION: Molten steel is cast at temps. higher by ≥5°C than a solidification initiation temp. in a mold. Next, the granular steel pieces of ≤1mm grain sizes having the components of the component type A of Table 1 are blown together with gaseous Ar at the ratio of the equation I. In the equation I, α is the flatness of a mold, D is the average thickness mm of a steel ingot and K is a constant which is 10W20. Further, the granular steel pieces of ≤1mm grain sizes having the components of the component type B of the Table 1 are blown together with gaseous Ar at the ratio of the equation II. The α, WD, K in the equation II are the same as those of the above-mentioned equation I. The second blowing of the steel pieces may be omitted if the temp. T in the head part of the molten steel at the second blowing of the steel pieces is T≤Tm+5°C (where Tm is a liquid phase temp.).
