Abstract

PURPOSE: To handle safely and economically a solution containing at least formic acid and water, by keeping the solution in a closed apparatus having the inner surface made of Ti and/or a Ti alloy at a specific temperature corresponding to the concentration of the formic acid in the solution.
CONSTITUTION: A solution containing at least formic acid and water, e.g. a solution containing formaldehyde, is handldes in a closed apparatus having the inner surface made of Ti and/or a Ti alloy while maintaining the solution at a temperature ≥100°C when the concentration of the formic acid in the solution is <30wt% or at a temperature expressed by the formula t=2F+70 [t(°C) is the lower limit temperature of the solution for handling; F(wt%) is the concentration of the formic acid] or higher, preferably ≤180°C, when F is ≥30wt%. A Ti plate specified by JIS H4600 is preferably used as the Ti, and a Pd-Ti alloy with a Pd content of about 0.2% is preferred as the Ti alloy since they are excellently anticorrosive.
