Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:N-[ 3-( 3-Carboxy-3-hydroxypropylamino )-3-carboxy-2-hydroxypropyl]-azetidine-3-hydroxy-2-carboxylic acid, i.e. mugineic acid.
USE: Useful as an agricultural chemical, and widely applicable to medicnes, pigments, analysis and separation of rare metals with the ability to form a complex with a bivalent metal.
PROCESS: A seed of rye (Secale cereale L.) is floated on water until the second leaf puts forth and the young seedling is reared in the Hoagland culture liquid. After the emergence of the fourth leaf, FeCl3 is removed from the Hoagland culture liquid, and reared in a culture liquid deficient in iron adjusted to pH7.4W8.0. At about the emergence of the fifte leaf, the root of the seedling in the state of deficient iorn is immersed in a desalted tap water for 3hr, and the procedures are repeated to release active substances. The desalted aqueous solution containing the active substances thus collected is concentrated and purified to give the compound of the formula.
