Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the occurrence of plane transverse cracking in a cast-iron- made mold for casting steel ingot on account of thermal stresses by providing a plane longitudinal band of a specific shape in said mold.
CONSTITUTION: The shape and size of the longitudinal band 4 for preventing plane transverse cracking in a cast-iron-made mold 2 for casting steel ingot are set as follows. Namely, the ratio H1/H0 between the height H1 from the bottom end of the mold in the maximum wall thickness part 6 of the band 4 and the height H0 of the entire part of the mold is set at 0.65W1.0, and the thickness angle α of the band 4 is set at ≤5°. Also, the overall thickness D of the mold in the maximum wall thickness part of the band 4 is set at 250W350mm. By the installation of the longitudinal band of the shape and size as described above to the mold, the occurrence of plane transverse cracking in the mold on account of thermal stresses is prevented, the durability of the mold is increased and the quality of cast steel ingots is improved.
