Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the formation of longitudinal crack in the corner of a slab, by specifying the respective quantities of cooling water for longer and shorter sides of cast high-carbon steel slab which contains ≥ 0.5% C just under the mold.
CONSTITUTION: Tensile stress S2 acts on near the corner of longer side 4, where shell is thinnest, of solidified shell of a slab 2 at the lower end of a mold because of the bulging of the longer side 4 and the shrinkage of the shorter side 6 caused by the strong cooling. To reduce the action of stress 2, the longer side is cooled strongly in order to reduce the bulging as small as possible and the shorter side is cooled weakly in order to reduce the shrinkage of the shell at the shorter side, in addition, the growth of shell thickness is restrained as small as possible so as to follow the bulging at the longer side easily. Therefore the longer side 4 is compulsively cooled with about 1.6W2.0 l/kg.min water which restrains the formation of bulging, and the shorter side 6 is cooled with water restricted in quantity to ≤ 1/2 that for the longer side.
