Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the infiltration of an electrolyte into a gas chamber by adding a thickener in the electrolyte to form a slurry where alkali carbonates are used for the electrolyte of the fuel cell. CONSTITUTION:A fuel electrode 3 provided with a fuel gas chamber 2 and an oxygen electrode 5 provided with a gaseous oxidizing agent chamber 4 are inserted in an electrolyte storage bath 1 to form a fuel cell of soaked type. Alkali carbonates, for example a carbonate mixture of lithium carbonate and potassium carbonate the molar ratio of which is 7:3, are used for an electrolyte of the fuel cell. A thickener such as magnesia, lithium aluminate, or potassium titanate is mixed to form a slurry. It is preferable that fine particles of less than 10mum in diameter is used for the thickener.
