Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled substance exhibiting a remarkable antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, by reacting a quinolinecarboxylic acid with an alkyl halide, etc., and if necessary hydrolyzing the resultant reaction product.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I (R1 is H or lower alkyl; R2 is lower alkyl or acyl; X and X1 are H or halogen; however, are not H at the same time) is reacted with a compound of formula II (R3 is lower alkyl; X2 is halogen or sulfonyloxy) at room temperature to 160°C, and the resultant reaction product is hydrolyzed if necessary to give a compound of formula III (R4 is H, lower alkyl or acyl). The reaction may be preferably carried out in the presence of a base, e.g. an alkali carbonate, in some cases.
