PURPOSE:To perform easy operation of starting electric discharge in a lamp and decrease voltage required for restarting the lamp, by applying the voltage to across electrodes in a state that a filament is heated. CONSTITUTION:To the inside of a luminous tube 1, made of quartz and provided in a high pressure mercury vapor lamp, where main electrodes 2, 3 are arranged at its both ends to connect a filament 5 to one main electrode 2 of them, mercury and start-assisting argon gas are sealed. The main electrodes 2, 3 are connected to a lighting device 12 through leads 8, 9. The filament 5 is connected to the lighting device 12 through a lead 10. If voltage from a power source 13 is applied to the high pressure mercury vapor lamp through the lighting device 12, electric discharge is started across the main electrodes 2, 3. For restarting operation after the high pressure mercury vapor lamp is once turned off, the voltage is applied to between the main electrodes 2, 3 in a state that the filament 5 is heated.
