The main electrodes 2, 3 are connected through leads 8, 9 to a lighting device 12. While the filament 5 connected to the main electrode 2 is connected through a lead 10 to the lighting device 12. When connecting the high pressure mercury lamp 1 through the lighting device 12 to the power source 13 and applying the voltage, the discharge will start immediately between the main electrodes 2, 3, and the current controlled by the lighting device 12 will flow between the main electrodes 2, 3.
