Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce steel or cast iron or a specific composition of slag with good heat efficiency by a method wherein a special material such as alumina-based material is added to a mixture of aluminum molten slag and scale, then is heated to a high temperature to cause a thermite reaction.
CONSTITUTION: To a mixture of aluminum molten slag and scale, one or more of alumina-, calcium-, silicic acid-, and cabon-based materials are mixed. The mixture is treated with any one or more of an igniting agent, electric arching, and high- temperature heating to cause a thermite reaction by metal aluminum in the molten aluminum slag and iron oxide in the scale. This effectively reduces scale and heats and melts the reaction products and additives. The molten product is cooled and solidified, thereby obtaining a special slag having chemical composition: Al2O3: 35% or more, CaO: 50% or less, Fe2O3: 20% or less, Si2O: 10% or less, MgO: 5% or less, and AlN: 15% or less.
