Abstract

PURPOSE: To detect an accurate ingot position by providing a measuring device which measures an ingot length with high accuracy in the lower process of a cutting machine, and correcting the ingot length during casting and the position of charge unit from the cut ingot length measured with said measuring device.
CONSTITUTION: Casting length is counted from a detecting roll 5 in contact with an ingot 4, by a pulse generator 8 contained in said roll. The pulse count values thereof are corrected with a casting length operator 9 and are sent to a central processing unit 12. In the unit 12, the casting length of each charge is calculated from the signal of a casting control unit 10 and said operator 9, and the position detection of the leading and trailing ends of the charge is carried out. Said unit outputs an adequate ingot cutting length to a cutting control unit 11. The ingot cut with the cutting machine 6 is measured of its length accurately with an ingot measuring device 13, and the information thereof is fed back to the unit 12, by which the casting length of the uncut charge is corrected.
