Abstract
PURPOSE: To know the accurate bloom boundary position and perform adequate cutting control by detecting the width of the bloom by the signal of the load cells provided to the measure rolls on the inlet side of the cutting machine of the variable mold casting equipment.
CONSTITUTION: At the time of cutting 8 the bloom having been drawn by pinch rolls 5 to a required length after straightening the same with a straightening machine 6, a pulse generator 16 is attached to the measure roll 7 and pinch roll 5 for measuring the bloom length and is let to generate the pulses proportional to the bloom length. Load cells 8 are mounted in accompaniment to generators 16 thru 2. To continuously cast molten steel while changing the mold 3 width with the above constitution, a casting mold control unit 12 announces the mold width change signal to a control computer 14. From this signal and the casting length by pulse counting, the approximate position of the bloom boundary is known and the rolls 7 are driven. Next, a bloom boundary detector 13 detects the width change of the bloom, announces the same to the computer 14 and further emits a cutting command to a cutting control unit 15, so that the boundary part of the bloom is cut from the other portion by the cutter 9.
