Abstract
PURPOSE:To detect shaft torsion with high sensitivity and reliability without contacting by forming segments on the circumferential surface of a rotating shaft at equal intervals and in the axial direction, by irradiating them with two spot beams of a small diameter in the axial direction and at an interval of prescribed distance, and by detecting the phase difference between the reflected light beams. CONSTITUTION:Onto the circumferential surface of rotating shaft 1, thin lines 2 of about 100mm. in length are provided in the axial direction and at prescribed pitches (several - tens mum). Those are formed by laser beam engraving. In two photodetector 3 and 4 at an interval of prescribed distance in the axial direction, light beams from light souces 7 of laser diodes, etc., are made via lenses 8 into extremely small spots, which are caused to strike the rotating shaft and reflected light beams are detected by photodetectors 10 via half-mirrors 9. Their outputs are compared with each other by phase comparing circuit 11 and the torsion of the rotating shaft is measured by using the phase difference. Thus, the torsion of rotating shaft 1 can be measured with high sensitivity and reliability without contacting.
