Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a display cell of high quality being stable for a long period, by covering the film forming surface with water repellent film to stabilize the electrochemical coloring and fading phenomenon within the cell.
CONSTITUTION: An all solid state type electrochromic display cell formed by laminating an electrochromic layer (WO3, MoO3, etc.) 12, a dielectric film (CrO3, LiF, etc.) 13, and an upper electrode (thin Au film) 14 sequentially on a transparent substrate 9 provided with a transparent electrode pattern 10 and a lead part 11 is covered with a water repellent film (Teflon film, silicone film, etc.) 15. The film is formed, for instance, by sputtering method, and the cell to be processed is placed on the substrate side of the processing device to discharge in the atmosphere of inert gas (e.g. argon) using Teflon as the target. Then, after sputtering, a Teflon film (a pinhole-free film may be obtained at the film thickness of about 3000Å or more) is formed on the surface of the cell being processed.
