Abstract

PURPOSE:To make the distribution of AlN in Ni base normalized steel even and fine to improve low-temp. toughness remarkably, by adjusting Al and N contents of the steel, by continuing heat treatment of the steel after it is cooled to a temp. not higher than that at which Al and N forms supersaturated solid soln. CONSTITUTION:A low-alloy steel composed of 0.05-0.30% C, 0.02-0.60% Si, 0.02-2.00% Mn, 0.02-2.50% Cr, 1.0-10.0% Ni, Mo>=(Ni+Cr+Mn)/50, or in addn., one or more members selected from the group consisting of Cu, V, Nb, Co, B. The steel contains 20-300ppm N, and 0.01-0.02 excess Al defined by sol. Al-2(N-0.3Ti). The slab is subjected to soln. treatment by heating it to a temp. not lower than that at which Al-N forms solid soln., then it is forged or rolled. It is cooled to a temp. 500-600 deg.C at which Al, N form supersaturated solid soln. Finally it is subjected to annealing, hardening, and tempering at a temp. not lower than 650-710 deg.C, i.e., high-temp. ferritic zone. Hereby low-temp. toughness of the steel is improved.
