Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve quality such as shape and surface defects slabs by inserting a heat pipe from the outside wall to the inside wall of the mold and letting cooling water contact the portions exposing from the outside wall thereby controlling the cooling capacity.
CONSTITUTION: A shield barrel 8 is slidably fitted onto the cooling part 72 of a heat transfer element 7 and a sprayer 9 of cooling water is provided in the upper part so that the portions exposing from the shield barrel 8 are cooled. Controlling of the heat flow passing in each heat reansfer element 7 is accomplished by changing the surface area of the exposed parts to which the cooling water is sprayed. To control cooling of the mold, the optimum in-mold heat-transfer distribution for the appropriate steel kind is beforehand obtained through numerical calculation, based on which each shield barrel 8 is slided to set the cooling area. If spraying of water is done after the setting, the portions of larger heat flow as compared to the portions of smaller heat flow are force-cooled and this results in that the heat flows are evened over the entire surface of the mold wall.
