Abstract

PURPOSE: To cast a thick-walled ingot of less surface defects continuously by moving ingot support rolls and the spray nozzles between the respective rolls back and forth priodically along the ingot drawing direction.
CONSTITUTION: Support rolls 1 right under a mold 5 and spray nozzles 2 are moved back and forth periodically in the drawing direction of a ingot 4 at every unit of segments 6. By this reciprocating movement, the cooling patterns constituted of a roll cooling area (I) by stagnating water 3, a radiation, convection and scattering water cooling area (II, and a direct spray cooling area (III) are progressed at higher speeds and separately from the progression by drawing of the ingot 4. As a result, the temp. distribution in the longitudinal direction of the ingot 4 is made uniform, and the thick walled ingot 4 having less surface defect is continuously cast.
