Abstract
1481438 Continuous casting SUMITOMO METAL INDUSTRIES Ltd .3 Oct 1974 [4 Oct 1973 12 Nov 1973] 42979/74 Heading B3F A continuously cast steel slab 8 is guided in at least part of a secondary cooling zone by rollers 10 carried by at least one pair of fixed supports 11 around which they roll in endless procession with descent of the slab 8. They are 10-150 mm in diameter. The length of the rollers 10 may be greater than the width of the slab 8 as indicated in Fig. 8 or there may be lines of short rollers 10, Fig. 3A, in which case they may be staggered as shown. The plain or ball bearings of the short rollers are interlinked from line to line as indicated and the lines may be broken, with the lines in at least two rows instead of one as shown. For spraying the slab 8, there may be spray nozzles in the supports 11, in recesses in the surface, or there may be slits 21, Fig. 5D, which run longitudinally and transversely, in a grid pattern, or in just one of these directions. The supports 11 may consist of a frame, Fig. 8, of alternate pairs of thin bars 24 and thick bars 25 on keep bars 26 so that gaps 27 are formed. An inductor in the inner space 23 stirs the liquid steel 6 in the slab 8. The metal in a mould 3 fed by an immersed spout 1 has a powder cover 2 and passes between cooling plates 4 with spray holes and rollers 5, being withdrawn by pinch rolls 12.
