Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound easily, without the formation of by-products, by reacting a substituted benzoic acid ester and dimsyl sodium, and heating the resulting β-ketosulfoxide together with zinc or tin in a heterogeneous solvent system under alkaline conditions.
CONSTITUTION: The title compound of formula III is obtained by reacting a compound of formula I (R is lower alkoxy; R' is lower alkyl) and dimsyl sodium (CH3SOCH2Na) and heating the formed compound of formula II together with zinc or tin in a heterogeneous solvent under alkaline conditions. In order to fulfil the alkaline conditions, NaOH, etc. is used. The heterogeneous solvent is a mixed solvent of water and an organic solvent (e.g. benzene) which dissolves reaction products and is immissible with water. Zinc or tin is pref. of powdery state and the amount is at least 1 gram atom per mole of the compound of formula I.
USE: Precursor of phenylacetic acid derivatives which are important as anti-inflammatory analgesics.
