Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent deformation owing to hardening and let hardening of high accuracy be accomplished by carburizing the surfaces of the parts formed of low carbon steel then hardening the required portions through laser light radiation. CONSTITUTION:The intended parts are made by pressing low carbon steel of C< 0.2% and the portions requiring abrasion resistance are gas-carburized to be carburized to about C<0.7%. The carburized portions are then radiated with laser light and oil-hardened, whereby only the carburized layers are selectively quench- hardened. On the other hand, the base material is the low carbon steel itself and is therefore not hardened, thus deforation owint to hardening does not occur and only the required portions are quench-hardened. Here, the depth of the hardened layers may be readily controlled by controlling the depth of the carburized layer.
