Abstract

PURPOSE:To harden the entire surface of parts to be hardened uniformly in the stage of hardning a plate-member having projecting parts by laser by controlling the thickness of a laser absorbing film to be coated in accordance with the angle of inclination and mass of the surfaces to be hardened. CONSTITUTION:In the stage of heating and hardening the surface of a platelike member 1 having projecting parts 2 like teeth by irradiating the same with laser 4, a laser absorbing agent 3 such as graphite or manganese phosphate is coated on the surface to be hardened in order to improve hardening efficiency. In this case, the coating thickness of the agent 3 is adjusted to 10-20mum in accordance with the depth of hardening layers 5 and the angle of irradiation of the laser. The laser absorbing agent is not coated on the surface 8 of the teeth 2 which have high absorption rates of laser, are of small mass and are vulnerable to overheating according to the irradiation angle of the laser 4 or said agent is coated to thin thicknesses of 0-3mum. The hardening layers 5 of uniform thickness are formed over the entire surface including the parts 2.
