Abstract

PURPOSE:To enhance the work efficiency and productivity by coating the surface of a part of a member to be hardened with a heat resistant coating to form a film and by irradiating the surface with laser beams to harden the part. CONSTITUTION:The surface of a part 2 of a member 1 to be hardened is coated with a heat resistant coating forming a nonconductor film 3 which absorbs efficiently light in the far infrared region. For example, when a silicone resin or inorg. coating is used, it is stable at 600-1,000 deg.C and absorbs laser beams by about 100%. By irradiating the surface of the part 2 having the formed film 3 with laser beams 4, the part 2 is heated to a temp. above the transformation point, and it is self-cooled.
