Abstract
PURPOSE:To utilize a laser beam most effectively in order to produce the broadest hardening area in heating and hardening of the surface of a work by a laser beam, by specifying the ratio of the distance between a beam lens and the work to the focal length of the lens. CONSTITUTION:In heating and hardening of a work 3 by irradiating a laser beam 1 through a lens 2 on the work 3, the value ab (distance between a lens 2 and a work 3/the focal length of the lens 2) is set in a range from 1.4-1.5. The laser beam 1 in the set range exhibits excellent effect and hardens the work 3 over the broadest surface area thereof.
