Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the laser beam absorptivity of a metallic surface by irradiating linearly polarized laser to the metallic surface in such a way that its polarized component is included within the incident surface. CONSTITUTION:The laser beam linearly polarized so as to have only the polarized component included in an incident surface is used as the laser beam to be irradiated to a metallic surface. If the absorptivity of the P polarized component is defined as QP, and that of the S polarized component as QS, these are always QS(9)<QP(10) within a 0 deg.<theta0<90 deg. range where an incident angle is defined as theta0. Hence, in the 0 deg.<theta0<90 deg. range, the ratio of the absorption energy to irradiated layer energy can be increased by irradiating the laser beam having no S polarized component of low absorptivity. Particularly if the laser beam is so irradiated as to make theta0=thetaB, the QP(10) assumes a max. value, and the energy entrainment effect from the laser light to metal is considerably improved.
