Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain surface hardened parts of high accuracy which cause extremely less strains by heating steel parts in a carbonitriding atmosphere to diffuse specific amts. of C and N into the surfaces of said parts then immersing the parts in a cooling medium of specific temps. thereby chaning the structure. CONSTITUTION:Steel parts are heated in a carbonitriding atmosphere to control the average contents of C and N at the depth down to 0.4mm. from the surfaces to >=0.6% and >=0.1% respectively. Thence, the parts are immediately immersed in a cooling medium set to 150-500 deg.C, to change the diffused layers rich of C and N from austenite structure to martensite, bainite or their mixed structure. Further, it is also possible to suppress the generation of heat treatment strains by immersing the parts into the cooling medium of 150-500 deg.C after lowering the temp. thereof to an Ar3+150 deg.C temp. range from the Ar3 based on the composition of the carbonitrided layers prior to immersion into the cooling medium thereby applying quick cooling treatment.
