Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the fatigue strength of iron and steel material by applying sub-zero treatment of a short time to the austenite contained iron or steel material having undergone austempering to transform part or the whole of the austenite of the surface layer to martensite. CONSTITUTION:Spheroidal graphite cast iron is heated to 900 deg.C and is held at that temperature for 2hrs to perfectly austenitize the structure, after which it is hardened in the salt bath which is held at 235 deg.C. After it has been held in that state for 2hrs, it is taken out from the salt bath and is air cooled down to room temperature, thence it is dipped for 10 seconds in the mixed solution of liquid nitrogen and isopentane which is held at -100 deg.C, whereby the sub-zero treatment is done. This marthensitizes part or the whole of the austenite structure in the surface layer and improves fatigue strength.
