Abstract
PURPOSE: To prevent reduction of the frictional characteristics of the abrasive material due to frictional heat and improve the resistance to fading of the abrasive material by a method wherein grooves are provided on the surface of the abrasive material by high-temperature beam processing and concurrently a heat hysteressis is given to said abrasive material by the beam processing.
CONSTITUTION: The abrasive material 1 for the brake is made of resin mold frictional material consisting principally of asbestos or semimetallic frictional material consisting principally of steel wool or the like and is bonded to the upper surface of a back panel 3 consisting of ferrous metal or the like, for example, through an adhesive 2. In this case, grooves 5 such as respective examples shown by (a) to (e) are provided on the surface of the abrasive material 1 by the high-temperature beam processing and concurrently the heat hysteresis is given to the abrasive material by this beam processing. In order to widen the effective width W2 of the heat- treatment for the peripheries of the grooves 5 which are receiving the heat hysteresis, O2 gas is blown against the processing surface as an assistant gas to expedite the oxidizing.
