Abstract

PURPOSE: To accomplish accurate discrimination of the condition of the road surface not depending on driver's judgment by determining slippery status of the road surface from the vehicle speed and the wheel speed using the reflected microwave from the road surface.
CONSTITUTION: The microwave is emitted to the road surface 14 through the antenna 1. The reflected wave from the road surfce is received with the antenna and processed in the Doppler processing circuit 5 to detect the Doppler frequency corresponding to the speed of the vehicle. The frequency voltage (F-V) converter 6 produces a voltage corresponding to the actual speed of the vehicle. On the other hand, the voltage corresponding to the wheel speed is generated through the rotary body 7, the wheel speed sensor 8 and the F-V converter 9. The output of these converters 6 and 9 is compared by the comparator 10 and converted into the signal correspoding to the slippage of the road surface so that the slippage is determined based thereon. The alarm 13 is actuated by the discrimination signal through AND gate 12 which is made to open by the detection signal of the water drop, ice and the like from the water drop sensor 11. Accordingly, the road surface conditions can be determined accurately without requiring driver's judgement thereby permitting proper counter actions to be taken.
