Abstract

PURPOSE: To eliminate the malfunction caused by the multiple reflection on the road surface by securing a constant coincidence between the transmission cycle of the ultrasonic wave and the road surface cycle, and at the same time securing an accurate vehicle detection as well as the detection of the traffic quantity and the degree of traffic confusion.
CONSTITUTION: The ultrasonic signals from ultrasonic signal generator 101 are sent to ultrasonic transmitter/receiver 104, and the ultrasonic waves given from 104 are transmitted onto the road surface. The reflected waves sent from the road surface and the vehicles are received at 104 and then sent to vehicle detector 110 or road surface cycle detector 120. Vehicle detection signals DS and DC delivered from both detectors 110 and 120 are sent to the information center via OR circuit 118. At the same time, the road surface cycle is measured at every fixed time through detector 120, and the wave transmission cycle is coincided with the latest road surface cycle via detector 110 based on the road surface position data signals sent from detector 120. As a result, a coincidence can always be secured between the both cycles regardless of the change of the road surface cycle.
