Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the performance of detecting a vehicle running at a low speed while making it possible to detect a standing vehicle by changing the operation mode of a vehicle sensor on the Doppler system over between the Doppler detection type and reflected pulse detection type. CONSTITUTION:The vehicle sensor in operation is normal of the Doppler detection type (mode 1); and speed arithmetic circuit 8 calculates a mean speed over a constant number of vehicles and comparing circuit 14 compares the mean speed signal 11 to reference speed 17 initially set. When the mean speed is greater than the reference speed, mode 1 is set. Then when the mean speed decreases below the reference speed, mode 2 is set and the control is transferred to the operation of the reflected pulse detection type, thereby waiting vehicle detection. Right after a vehicle is detected, the sensor serves as Doppler detection type one to measure the speed of the detected vehicle and, at the point in time when speed arithmetic ends, returns to the operation of the reflected pulse detection type.
