Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as textile modifiers and finishes readily and economically without forming water of bad odor free from waste water treating equipment, by reacting acrylic acid with an easily available specific acetic acid compound.
CONSTITUTION: Acrylic acid is reacted with ethyl acetate in the presence of an esterification catalyst, e.g. sulfuric or hydrochloric acid, and a polymerization inhibitor, e.g. phenol or hydroquinone monomethyl ether, at 50W150°C to give the title compound. Preferably, the compound is obtained through a combination of (A) the reaction step wherein acrylic acid is reacted with ethyl acetate, (B) the separation step wherein the ethyl acrylate and acrylic acid are separated from the reaction product, (C) the reaction step wherein acetic acid is reacted with ethylene, and (D) the circultion step wherein ethyl acetate thus obtained is returned to the first step (A).
