Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the yield of the objective product in the preparation of the titled substance by the reaction of methacrylamide sulfate with methanol in the presence of water, suppressing the loss of methanol, by using both water and methanol in high molar ratios.
CONSTITUTION: The objective substance is prepared by reacting (A) 1mol of methacrylamide sulfate obtained from acetone cyanohydrin and sulfuric acid with (B) 4.5W6mol of methanol in the presence of (C) 5W7mol of water. The esterification reaction is carried out at 70W150°C under normal pressureW 10kg/cm2G for 30minW6hr, preferably in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor such as phenothiazine, hydroquinone, etc. The compound (A) is usually prepared by reacting 1mol of acetone cyanohydrin with 1.0W2.0mol of sulfuric acid at 100W180°C for 3W90min.
