Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound readily in almost a quantitative yield, by condensing a 1,4-dilower alkoxy-1,4-cyclohexadiene with malonitrile.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula II (R is lower alkyl is reacted with malonitrile in the absenceor presence of a solvent, if necessary in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. β-alanine or glycine, preferably at 50W100°C, to give 1,4-bis(dicyanomethylene)cyclohexane of formula I. The reaction may be carried out while distilling off the formed alcohol. The compound of formula II can be derived from benzoquinone.
