Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound for use as medicines having improved dilation action of blood vessels in high yield, by reacting a low-priced novel sulfonic acid-5-oxohexyl ester with an alkaline metallic salt of 3,7-dimethyxanthine.
CONSTITUTION: A metallic salt of 3,7-dimethylxanthine shown by the formula II is reacted with a sulfonic acid-5-oxohexyl ester shown by the formula III (R is alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, which may have a substituent group) to give 1-(5-oxohexyl)-3,7- dimethylxanthine shown by the formula I. The reaction is preferably carried out in a solvent, e.g., dimethylformamide, at 60W120°C. Sulfonic acid produced as by-products can be recovered and reused as a raw material of the compound shown by the formula III.
