Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide the title alloy contg. a respectively specified ratio of Zn, Mg, Zr, Mn, Cr and esp. B and giving a product with a surface grade free from cracking by extrusion.
CONSTITUTION: This Al-Zn-Mg type alloy contains 3W8% Zn, 0.5W3% Mg, 0.01W0.05% Zr 0.1W0.5% Mn, 0.01W0.15% Cr and 0.005W less than 0.02% B. By esp. adding B this alloy has improved hardenability, bulgeability and surface properties. A billet of this alloy is homogenized by sufficient heating at 400W550°C to enhance the stress corrosion cracking resistance. The homogenized billet is then extruded at 400W550°C to form a uniform fine recrystallized structure up to a depth of about 0.1mm from the suface of the resulting extruded surface. Thus, seizing to dies is prevented in extrusion, and the extruded material has a high surface grade.
