Abstract
PURPOSE:To achieve the improvement in transmission characteristics and the reduction in light loss by bonding optical fibers with a deviation in the polishing positions of their polishing faces. CONSTITUTION:The curvatures of the main fiber 1 and branch fiber 2 to be bonded are made the same, and the polishing quantity of the branch fiber 1 is made larger than that of the main fiber 1. With the maximum polishing positions H, H' of the main fiber 1 and branch fiber 2 being mutually deviated and with the right ends of the polishing faces being mutually aligned, the main fiber and branch fiber 2 are bonded. Then, if light 18 having a propagation angle theta5 enters the branch fiber 2 at the bonding position D, the propagation angle theta6 to the branch fiber 2 is changed to theta6=theta5+a3-a4 (a3= HO'D, a4= H'O''D). In the case of a4>a3, the mode having propagated in the main fiber 1 is converted to a lower mode and even if the light enters from the incident position where it is converted to a higher mode, the rate of conversion becomes small, thus the intended object is achieved.
