Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable even the light of higher order mode to be propagated without loss by making the numerical aperture of an optical fiber constituting the photo branching and coupling device larger than the numerical aperture of the optical fibers constituting the main transmission lines connected thereto. CONSTITUTION:This constitutes the photo branching and coupling device by securing two optical fibers formed with flat parts on the side faces by opposing said flat parts, whereby, e.g., the photo branching and coupling device 10 is so formed as to have a numerical aperture (NA) larger than NA of the optical fibers 9, 9' and a transmitting station X and recieving stations Y, Z are provided. In general, as the Na of the fiber increases, transmission band decreases but the transmission path length of the photo branching and coupling device 10 is short and therefore the transmission band of the entire part does not decrease. Hence, even when light enters the branching filter 10 or comes out from the branching filter 10, the light even of higher order mode may be propagated with less loss.
