Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title high-quality cmpounds, intermediates for ampholytic surfactants usable for cosmetics, in a simple process efficiently, by reacting diamines with higher fatty acids under specific temperature and pressure conditions.
CONSTITUTION: Diamines, e.g. H2NCH2CH2NHC2H4OH, etc., of formula I: (X is 2W4C alkylol group) are reacted with higher fatty acids, e.g. caprylic, lauric acids, etc., of formula II: (R is ≥8C alkyl or alkenyl group) to form imidazoline compounds of formula III at 170W210°C under a pressure about 15W150mmHg higher than the vapor pressure of the diamines at the temperature while removing the formed water continuously. The molar ratio of the diamines to the higher fatty acids is usually 1:1W1:1.5, preferably 1:1.03W1:1.3
