Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a compound useful as a coupling component in high yield, by reacting an aniline with diethyl sulfate in an aqueous solvent at a pH of the reaction mixture in a specific acidic region.
CONSTITUTION: An aniline of formula I (X is H or lower alkoxyl; Y is lower alkyl), e.g. m-acetylaminoaniline or 2-methoxy-5-acetylaminoaniline, is reacted with diethyl sulfate in an aqueous solvent in an amount of 1W10 times, preferable 1.5W4 times, that of the compound of formula I to give a compound of formula II. In the process, the pH of the reaction mixture is kept in the range of 3.5W6.0, preferably 4.0W5.5. An alkali, e.g. NaOH or Na2CO3, is used as a deacidifying agent for adjusting the pH. The desired yield is not obtained beyond the pH range described above.
