Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled substance useful as a light stabilizer for polyurethane, etc. in high conversion and high selectivity, by reacting a polysubstituted-4-piperidinol with an alkylating agent in a solvent consisting of a sulfolane or mononitrobenzene.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I (R1 is H or alkyl: R2 and R3 are alkyl or together form an alicylic carbon bond ; R4 is H or hydrocarbon group) is reacted with an alkylating agent to give the titled substance. In the process, a solvent consisting of a sulfolane expressed by formula II (R5 and R6 are alkyl) and formula III (R7 is alkylene, etc.), e.g. tetramethylene sulfone, and a mononitrobenzene is used. A deacidifying agent, e.g. an alkaline metallic carbonate, and water (in an amount of 0.5W40wt% based on the total reaction system) may be present in the reaction system if necessary. An aliphatic halide is suitably used as the alkylating agent.
