Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an alkylated substance useful as a coupling component for synthesizing a monoazo dye in high yield, by reacting an aniline with diethyl sulfate in water solvent in the presence of a specific deacidifying agent in a reaction system kept at a specific pH value.
CONSTITUTION: An aniline of formula I (X is H or lower alkoxyl), e.g. m-acetylaminoaniline, is reacted with diethyl sulfate in water solvent in the presence of a deacidifying agent to give a compound of formula II. In the process, a caustic alkali, e.g. NaOH, is used as the deacidifying agent, and the pH of the reaction system is kept at 8.5W13 by adding an aqueous solution of a caustic alkali thereto. The temperature of the alkylation reaction is 20W80°C, and the molar ratio between the starting material aniline and the diethyl sulfate is 1:2W3.
