Abstract

Amines are prepared by heating ammonia or an amino compound of the formula RNH2 (where R is a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbyl group) with a mono-sulphate ester of the formula R1OSO3M (where R1 is derived from the alcohol R1OH having at least 6 carbon atoms and M is a cation) in an alkaline aqueous reaction medium wherein the monosulphate ester is soluble and which comprises a solution of at least 25% by weight, based on the weight of water, of (a) one or more salts of aromatic sulphonic acids in which the aromatic nucleus contains no alkyl substituent having more than 4 carbon atoms or (b), when ammonia is employed as reactant, of urea; and isolating the resultant amine of the formula R1NH2 or RR1NH. Ammonia may be employed in the form of an aqueous solution or as a gas and the mono-sulphate ester reactants may be polyoxyalkylene ether sulphates. The aqueous alkaline solution remaining after extraction of the amine therefrom by, for example, treatment with caustic alkali may be treated with dilute sulphuric acid to reduce the pH to 7.0 to 8.0, the substantially neutral solution so obtained filtered and the filtrate concentrated for recycle to the amine preparation step.
