Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain azo compounds of high purity from amino compounds in high yields under mild reaction conditions with ease, by using a catalyst, e.g. organic quaternary ammoniums in a nonuniform reaction solvent consisting of an aqueous and an organic phases without requiring expensive hydrazine as a raw material.
CONSTITUTION: Amino compounds of formula I: [R1 and R2 are 1W8C aliphatic, 3W8C alicyclic groups, etc:, R3 is nitrile, ester group-COOR4(R4 is 1W4C aliphatic group)] are reacted with metal salts of hypohalogenous acids of formula M(OX)n [M is alkali (earth) metal; X is Cl, Br, etc:, n is the valence of M] or with alkyl hypohalides of formula R5OX (R5 is 1W6C aliphatic group) in the presence of an alkali in a nonuniform reaction solvent consisting of an aqueous and an organic phases using at least one type of compound selected from organic quaternary ammoniums, organic quaternary phosphoniums, and large ring polyethers at 0W20°C for 10minW10hr to give azo compounds of formula II.
