Abstract
PURPOSE: A trihaloethane is heated in the presence of a hydrohalide salt of an organic base such as imidazole to produce the titled compound used as a monomer for synthesizing high polymers or as a synthetic intermediate in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: In the presence of a hydrohalide salt of an organic base of formula I (R1 is-CH2-CH2-, -CH=CH-, the group of formula II; R2 is H, methyl) such as 2-imidazoline, imidazole, benzimidazole, a trihaloethane such as 1,1,2-trichloroethane is heated at 230W320°C to produce a vinylidene halide such as vinylidene chloride. The reaction is preferably carried out in gas phase where the compound of formula I is supported on a carrier such as silica gel.
