Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain, in high purity and yield, a polymerizable organopolysiloxane without using an organic solvent, by reacting an epoxy group-containing organopolysiloxane with (meth)acrylic acid in the presence of a metal salt of the acid.
CONSTITUTION: A polymerizable organopolysiloxane represented by formula III, wherein R2 is H or methyl, B is a monovalent hydrocarbyl group or a group of formula IV, is prepared by reacting acrylic acid or methacrylic acid with an epoxy group-containing organopolysiloxane represented by formula I, wherein R1 is a monovalent hydrocarbyl group, A is a monovalent hydrocarbyl group or a group of formula II, a is 0, 1 or 2, n is 1W5, and m is 1W4, in the presence of an alkali metal salt of acrylic or methacrylic acid. It is preferred from a point of reactivity, yield, etc., that R1 in said formula I is a 1W4C alkyl or phenyl.
