Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare a naphthostyril useful as an intermediate for cationic dyes in easy handling, without using very toxic compounds, by heating an N-hydroxynaphthalimide in the presence of an inorganic acid anhydride or acid halide as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: An N-hydroxynaphthalimide of formula I or its derivative having a substituent, e.g. carboxyl group or halogen, at the naphthalene nucleus, is heated in the presence of a catalyst consisting of an inorganic acid anhydride or acid halide, preferably an anhydride or halide of phosphoric acid, in an organic solvent, e.g. o-dichlorobenzene, which has a boiling point higher than the reaction temperature and will not take part in the reaction, preferably at 100W250°C, more preferably at 150W250°C, to give the desired naphthostyril, e.g. formula II. The catalyst is used in an amount of 1/3 mole or more, preferably 1W5 moles per mole of the raw material.
