Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound useful as an intermediate of heat-resistant resins, by contacting a pentaalkylbenzene, a hexa-alkylbenzene, and/or their derivatives, with oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a vapor-phase oxidation catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: One or more compounds selected from the compounds of formulae I and II (R1W6 are 1W4C alkyl, halogenated alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, formylalkyl, caroxyalkyl, acetonyl, or acetyl) are brought into contact with an oxygen- containing gas (e.g. air) in the presence of a vapor-phase oxidation catalyst (e.g. vanadium oxide), to obtain pyromellitic anhydride. The molar ratio of the polyalkylbenzene to O2 is pref. 1 to 100W10,000, and the reaction temperature is 300W 650°C.
EFFECT: The objective compound can be prepared in high yield, by the direct, one- step reaction.
