Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title substance under mild conditions in high yield, by oxidizing a substituted benzene and acetic anhydride in the liquid phase with a gas containing molecular oxygen in the presence of hydrogen bromide (HBr) or HBr and hydrogen chloride at a relatively low temperature.
CONSTITUTION: A substituted benzene of the formula (R1 and R2 are isopropyl or cyclohexyl groups) and acetic anhydride are oxidized in the liquid phase with a gas containing molecular oxygen in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. hydrogen bromide (HBr) or HBr and hydrogen chloride, at 0W100°C to give the title substance. The amount of HBr is 0.01 mol/l or more, perferably 0.03W1.0 mol/l, and acetic anhydride may be used in an amount of 0.05wt% or more based on the substituted benzene, and preferably enough to make a converted phenol derivative form a phenyl acetate.
