Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover pyrimidine useful as an intermediate for the synthesis of drugs as an azeotripic mixture with water in a high concentration, by distilling an aqueous effluent containing a small amount of pyrimidine discharged from a process of preparing acrylonitrile from propylene.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution containing 5000 ppm or less of pyrimidine is distilled to recover a cut boiling at 98W99°C under normal pressure as an azeotropic mixture with water, thus giving pyrimidine in a high concentration. An aqueous effluent from gas phase catalytic oxidation of propylene with ammonia may be cited as the aqueous solution. To prevent the pyrimidine loss, the cut boiling at 90W 99.8°C is collected, and, if necessary, distilled. Pyrimidine is obtained with a high concentration by separating an aqueous solution containing 1.5% or more of pyrimidine with a solid alkali metal hydroxide to separate into two layers, from which the upper layer is separated.
