Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover acetaldehyde (X) and to incinerate bottoms conc. aqueous X, by rectifying crude hydrous K, by removing most of water from the side stream taken of a concentration distillation column, and by feeding the distillate to a recovery distillation column.
CONSTITUTION: Crude hydrous acetaldehyde, obtained by the Hoechst process, is fed to the rectifying column A, and chloroacetaldehyde (Y) containing a given concentration of acetaldehyde (X) is taken out as a side stream, which is fed to the concentration distillation column B. Most of water is then removed from the bottom, and substantially the total amount of X in the side stream and most of Y are distilled overhead, and fed to the recovery distillation column C. The high- purity X is obtained from the top, and the conc. aqueous Y is taken out of the column as bottoms, which are fed to the incineration system. A partial condenser is provided between the columns B and C to separate the bottoms into the vapor phase rich in X and the condensate rich in Y. The vapor phase is fed to the column C to reduce the load on distillation.
